St. Louis County – MSD to spend $4.7 billion to upgrade sewers over the next 23 years.

In April 2012, a judge approved the settlement of a federal lawsuit against the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. The settlement requires MSD to come into compliance with federal clean water standards, which will required MSD to spend a minimum of $4.7 billion over the next 23 years to upgrade the sanitary and stormwater sewer facilities. MSD will need to build facilities so that the sewage is carried separately from stormwater, to prevent sewage spillage into streams during heavy rains. The building of new facilities will result in condemnation by MSD for easements from property owners to build their new lines.
